- The Ministry of Environment announced that the Amendment Bill for Enforcement Ordinance ‘Persistent Pollutants Control Act (Formerly of Persistent Organic Pollutants Control Act)’ proposed to construct the domestic implementation foundation in order to cope with the commencement of ''''Minamata Convention on Mercury'''' was resolved at the State Council on March 21st, 2017.
* The primary contents of this Amendment Bill for Enforcement Ordinance ‘Persistent Pollutants Control Act include the control criteria prepared to prevent the exposure to mercury & toxication accident by adding the mercury to the kinds of persistent pollutants, providing the systematic improvement regarding the implementation of Convention obligation such as stipulating concrete scope of restricted manufacturing, export & import, and using the persistent pollutants.
* The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) adopted the Minamata Convention for joint international countermeasure against mercury in 2013, of which the Korean Government signed the Convention in 2014 promoting the domestic procedural process for ratification. The Convention shall become effective after 90 days once the 50 countries out of 128 countries signed the Convention have ratified, whereas the 38 countries including U.S.A. have completed the ratification to date.
