Date  2017-02-09 PM 2:22:21 Hit  136
Contents  ▷ A policy seminar on the present and future of wetlands conservation will be held to commemorate World Wetlands Day on February 2.

▷ Participants will discuss wetlands conservation policies under the theme of "Wetlands, our natural safeguard against disasters."

The Ministry of Environment (Minister Cho KyeungKyu) announced that it will hold a policy seminar on the present and future of wetlands conservation on February 2-3 in Gokseong County, South Jeolla Province to commemorate World Wetlands Day 2017.

World Wetlands Day marks the date of adoption of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called the Ramsar Convention, on February 2, 1971. It is celebrated every year since the Standing Committee of the Ramsar Convention designated February 2 as World Wetlands Day in 1996.

The Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention decided "Wetlands, our natural safeguard against disasters" as this year's theme. As the impacts of extreme events such as floods, droughts and typhoon have increased, the theme was set to raise awareness on the value and functions of wetlands that help reduce the impacts of natural disasters.

The policy seminar will take place at Rose Hall, Train Village of Gokseong County, inviting 130 wetland experts, civic group representatives and local government officials. The participants will have in-depth discussion on directions for effective wetlands conservation and management policies.

Kim Hyung-soo, chairman of Korea Wetlands Society, will share his thoughts on "future direction of wetlands conservation policies," while Yang Hae-geun, head of Korea Environmental Disaster Research Institute, and Kwak Seung-kuk, head of Nature & People, will give presentations on "evaluation and management of ecological index of wetlands" and "the role of private-public sector for smart conservation and use of wetlands" respectively.

On February 3, participants will join wetlands exploration and commentary program around Seomjin River's Chimsil wetlands. Chimsil wetlands were designated as the 22nd wetlands protection area by the Ministry of Environment last November.

Choi Jong-won, Director of Nature Policy Division mentioned that "Marking World Wetlands Day, we hope the seminar will serve as an opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of wetlands that enhance biodiversity and safeguard us against natural disasters such as floods and droughts."
