  • SEOUL, November 22, 2017 – The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) will take action to reduce fine dust in the streets of Seoul during the winter time when a lack of rainfall makes the fine particles more confined and highly concentrated than any other seasons.
According to the city government’s measures to improve air quality, fine dust-absorbing trucks have started its operations as of November 15, 2017, and they will continue to clean the street intensively during the four-month “winter cleaning period,” set by the city government, which runs from November 15, 2017 through March 15, 2018.
In a warmer season, water washing trucks have been run to wash fine dust off the streets, caused by exhaust gas and pollutants produced by tires and brakes. There are currently 191 water washing trucks in total in Seoul.”
To overcome the water-washing trucks’ seasonal limitations, the city government has switched its street cleaning method to dust-absorbing during the cold season since 2012.
The SMG plans to secure supplementary budget to purchase additional 13 trucks until the end of the year, so a total of 90 trucks will soon absorb fine dust throughout the city.
Meanwhile, the SMG held the “Street Cleaning Day,” an event that heralds the start of “winter cleaning period,” in the Sejong-daero area, central Seoul, on November 15, 2017. During the event, a dust-absorbing truck demonstrated its operation in the streets stretching from Sejong-ro Sageori (or Sejong-ro Intersection) to Sungnyemun Gate (or Namdaemun Gate) for 30 minutes from 10am.
The Director of Living Environment said “We introduced fine dust-collecting trucks to absorb fine particles in the streets during the winter, and plans to upgrade these trucks’ capacity and efficiency for better performances.” He added, “We are free from worries about water freezing when we use these trucks. We will make every effort to make cleaner streets and improve air quality for the citizens.”
