EU countries recycled more than 40% of plastic packaging in 2016, according to new industry figures.
A report commissioned by PlasticsEurope and the European Association of Plastics Recycling and Recovery Organisations (EPRO) found that European countries collectively recycled 6.8 million tonnes (Mt), 40.9% of its total 16.7Mt of plastic packaging waste, up from 39.5% in 2014.
All EU countries exceeded the EU minimum target of 22.5% recycling, with 26 member states recycling more than 30%, and 15 over 40%, according to the figures.
EPRO said the figures showed that national recycling schemes and targets, based on the EU packaging waste directive and extended producer responsibility, were working.
The statistics were fundamental for understanding “possible ways forwards around household, commercial and agricultural sector plastic packaging recycling”, said EPRO director Stuart Foster.
